We haven’t released anything for a while, but now we are here again with an interesting topic that many do not think about. You already know that we love chickpea as a fruit, but we haven’t often dealt with the chickpea as a plant.

We believe that you might not even know what the plant – about which everything related to hummus evolves – looks like.

We are not very realistic, but for us, the chickpea plant is as nice as useful and we would happily grow it for decoration… 😀 Certainly, people grow it exclusively for fruits.

The chickpea is a legume and its closest relatives are soya, peas, and beans. It is a hardy annual and can grow high up to 80 cm.

As well as its relatives, it has another super feature – it improves the fertility of the soil in that it biologically binds nitrogen in the ground and thus provides this element for other crops as well. We will add another positive feature of this plant – growing chickpeas requires less water than growing wheat, rice or the production of dairy products, for instance.

The largest producers of chickpeas are India, Turkey, Pakistan, Mexico, Argentina… Its popularity is continually increasing as people discover what the benefits of the chickpea fruits are and in what ways they can include chickpeas in their diet.

This time, we will not speak of its fruits, because we have written about the grains of this incredible plant and the way in which they contribute to the flavour and nutritional value of hummus as the “healthiest spread in the world” many times.

Now, you know one more reason why we love chickpeas so much and want them to become a part of our eating habits. 😀

Until next reading – best HUMMUS regards. 😉
